Today we continued with our pattern seeking enquiry, ‘Do bigger bulbs grow into bigger plants?’.
First we discussed the differences we noticed in a range of seeds and bulbs, grouping them into two groups and trying to identify differences. We decided that:
Seeds – are generally smaller, harder and that they grow above ground, in fruits and flowers. We also learned that they are only produced at the end of a plants life cycle.
Bulbs – are generally bigger and softer and that they grow below ground. We also realised that they tend to have all the bits a plant needs inside them, like root backs and shoots/leaves. The are also present underground throughout a plants life cycle, unlike seeds.
Next, we grouped our bulbs from smallest to largest, ready to plant them up in this order next week! We can’t wait to see if there are any noticeable changes as they grow. Some of the children thought that it may not affect the size, but instead may affect the speed at which they grow to adult size!
Lots of great science talk was had today, they are great little scientist, well done Year 2!
