LO: I can observe and identify living and non-living things

Today was our first science lesson in Year 2. We were excited to start learning our first unit: Living things and their habitats. We started the lesson with a question: ‘How do we know something is alive?’ to which the excited children said, ‘It can move!’, ‘It can grow!’, ‘It can eat!’ – of course, they are not wrong, however after we had read the book ‘Living and Non-Living things’ we realised lots of things that are not alive can do this too, like an aeroplane, water, or fire!

After we had discussed this further, we explored our field to find and classify the objects we found into three categories:

  • Living
  • Dead
  • Never been alive (non-living)

We are excited to consolidate our learning next lesson.
