Today the children came rushing in full of excitement to see what today holds! The corridors were abuzz this morning, with lots of children in all year groups catching me to ask, ‘What are we doing today?’ with big smiles plastered on their faces!
To start today, we took part in a draw along of Albert Einstein, your traditional grey-haired crazy scientist, we then discussed how this is a stereotype, with the children sharing their ideas of what diversity in science looks like.
We then begun to explore camouflage, looking at the Primary Science Teaching Trust’s ‘I Bet You Didn’t Know!’ articles. We then looked at camouflage in the real world and started to design our own camouflage pieces to hide on the playground!
After break, we had a LIVE read along and Q&A session with science author, Anna Claybourne. We already love her ‘Question of Science’ series and regularly use her ‘Science Makers’ books in our lessons. She told us all about writing, and how you don’t have to write stories, but can use writing to communicate all the answers to all the weird questions you have instead! She also told us all about why our eyeballs don’t fall out, and why we poo! We then got to ask her our own questions, which was so much fun!
Later on we spoke with Isabel Thomas, another Scientist and Author. She told us all about Tardigrades (water bears!) and they are so very cute! She also shared her methods of how she plans and writes stories, with her scientist eyes and her poet eyes! This inspired us to write our own science Haiku – a Sci-Ku!
Our journaling is really improving now we are on to our second day, and we are really enjoying it as a different output for recording our ideas and thinking.
Bring on tomorrow….
